Zofloya is both fascinating to study and a really good read. The main character, Victoria, is a strikingly unusual protagonist and very much subverts the conventions of what was thought to be appropriate 'women's literature' at the time Dacre was writing.
I wasn't sure whether to give this book three or four stars. The writing is more deserving of three stars; however, this novel marks a very different direction in gothic literature.
I was unprepared for how much I enjoyed this book! Victoria, the protagonist seduced into debauchery and crime by negligent parents and (for real) the devil himself, is simply way more interesting than any other character, whether virtuous or wicked.
